Balancing Growth| How to Embrace Change and Thrive in Your Training
by Greg Buford
First off, we have to understand that balance is not a fixed destination—it's a dynamic process that evolves as you grow. As you make progress, your center of balance shifts, requiring you to constantly adapt. This pursuit of balance can be both empowering and exhausting. Many people feel drained in their training journey because they realize that the version of themselves that once felt stable now demands new inputs to maintain that same sense of equilibrium. Each level of growth brings with it new challenges, and finding your balance again becomes an ongoing commitment, not just a one-time achievement.
To address the challenge of constantly finding a new balance as you grow in your training, here are a few strategies that can assist you:
#1 Embrace Adaptation:
Understand that growth means change, and that your body’s needs will evolve. Rather than resisting the changes, embrace them as a natural part of the process. Stay open to adjusting your routines, nutrition, and recovery methods.
#2 Focus on Periodization:
Implement a training program that uses periodization, where your workouts cycle through different phases—such as strength, endurance, hypertrophy, or recovery. This approach helps prevent burnout and stagnation, giving your body the necessary variety and rest to stay balanced while still progressing.
#3 Regularly Reassess Your Goals:
As you evolve, your goals should too. Whether it's lifting heavier, building endurance, or improving mobility, periodically reassessing and refining your goals ensures you’re in alignment with your current capabilities and aspirations.
#4 Prioritize Recovery and Rest:
Growth comes not just from pushing, but from how well you pull back and allow your body to recover. Incorporating active recovery days, adequate sleep, and relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation will help maintain balance in both your physical and mental well-being.
“Understanding that balance is fluid, not static, can make the process less overwhelming.”
#5 Stay Flexible with Nutrition:
Just like your workouts, your nutritional needs will shift as you progress. Ensure your diet evolves with your training, supplying the right mix of macros and micronutrients to fuel your new levels of performance.
#6 Focus on Mental Resilience:
Understanding that balance is fluid, not static, can make the process less overwhelming. Build mental toughness through mindfulness or other mindset techniques, allowing yourself to accept the ups and downs without feeling discouraged by the need to constantly adjust.
#7 Get Guidance When Needed:
As your training becomes more complex, consider seeking guidance from a coach or trainer who can help you navigate these shifts, ensuring your program stays aligned with your growth and evolving needs.
In essence, maintaining balance is about constantly adapting and evolving your approach as you progress. The more flexible and open you are to change, the easier it becomes to sustain long-term growth without feeling drained by the process. I know some of these strategies have worked for myself, as well as, my clients, so I hope they can be just as beneficial to you along your fitness journey too.
